My 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback Project

About The Project

This car was a basic shell with a rebuildable Ford truck 390 V8 and a rebuildable C6 3 speed automatic transmission. The car came to me with almost all new sheet metal including a full floor pan and full quarter panels. That is why I bought the car. Most of the cars I looked at to finish the way I
wanted…were rust buckets. I paid up for this car but it will be awesome when it is finished. I had this car shipped from about 2000 miles away on an enclosed truck transport. Not long after I got the car, I decided not to use the 390 V8. These engines are great but they came with
about 220 horsepower and lots of torque. My choice was to use the same engine that is in my 1956 Ford Park-Lane 2 Door Wagon…a Ford Blueprint 347 Stroker motor. My 56 Ford engine has a dyno tested 417 horsepower and 420 ft. pounds of torque. And it is based on the Ford 302 engine. After deciding on the engine I also decided on a Ford Automatic Overdrive transmission so when I am driving on the freeway at 70 mph I will only be at about 2000 rpms vs. about 3000 rpms without the overdrive. And ofcourse the rear axle is a 9 inch Ford that will receive a 3.73 posi gear set. The car should be a real screamer. The main hold up in getting all this done has been the car has been in the body and paint shop for about 5 months. For this car it was decided to get the paint work done before putting the engine and transmission in the car. See the Before and During pictures.

Here is a general list of the work done:

  • Pull 390 V8 engine and C6 transmission
  • Sent to bodywork and paint shop for what is promised to be a very cool finished product
  • Evaluate everything that will get done once back from the bodywork and paint shop
